7 Signs You Have Hard Water (and What to Do About It)

Most people with hard water don't know they have it. They just think their dishwasher is bad, their shampoo stopped working, or their shower door is impossible to keep clean.

Hard water is water with a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium. It picks up those minerals as it moves through underground rock, and central Indiana sits on a lot of limestone. Indiana water averages around 14 grains per gallon, which the U.S. Geological Survey would classify as very hard.

It isn't dangerous to drink, but it's hard on your home. Here are seven signs to look for.

1. White crust on your faucets and showerheads

This is the most obvious sign. When hard water dries, it leaves the minerals behind as a chalky white or tan buildup called scale. It's usually worst around the base of faucets and on showerhead nozzles. If you're already fighting it, our guide on how to remove hard water stains walks through the easiest fixes.

2. Spots and film on your dishes

Glasses come out of the dishwasher cloudy or covered in little white spots, even right after a cycle. That's mineral residue left behind as the water dries.

3. Soap that won't lather

Calcium reacts with soap to form soap scum instead of suds. If you find yourself using extra shampoo, dish soap, or laundry detergent to get the same results, hard water is a likely reason.

4. Dry skin and dull hair

That same soap scum doesn't fully rinse off. Many people notice their hands feel coated after washing, their skin feels tight after a shower, or their hair looks flat and dull.

5. Scummy tubs and cloudy shower doors

A gray ring around the tub, a film on the shower door, or a toilet ring that keeps coming back are all signs of minerals building up every time water dries.

6. Stiff, dingy laundry

Clothes and towels washed in hard water can come out feeling scratchy and looking faded or gray, because detergent doesn't clean as well and minerals get trapped in the fabric.

7. Water heater and appliance problems

This is the sign you can't see, and it's the most expensive. When hard water is heated, scale builds up inside water heaters, coffee makers, and dishwashers. The USGS notes this raises heating costs and lowers water heater efficiency. If your water heater pops and rumbles or your coffee maker keeps clogging, scale is a likely cause.

How to find out how hard your water is

If a few of those signs sound familiar, the next step is a number. Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (gpg) or milligrams per liter (mg/L).

Water hardness levels (USGS classification)
Hardness levelGrains per gallonmg/L
Soft0 to 3.50 to 60
Moderately hard3.5 to 761 to 120
Hard7 to 10.5121 to 180
Very hardover 10.5over 180

Home test strips from a hardware store give you a rough idea in a few seconds. They're cheap, but they're only an estimate and won't tell you about iron or other issues.

A professional water test gives you an exact hardness reading, checks for iron, and tells you what size softener your home would actually need. We do this for free at every home we visit.

What to do if you have hard water

You can manage the symptoms with vinegar, rinse aid, and a squeegee, but the minerals keep coming in with every gallon. The only way to stop all seven signs at once is a water softener, which removes the calcium and magnesium before the water reaches your faucets, appliances, and shower.

At Fresh Water Systems, water softeners are all we do. We install water softeners for as low as $1,999 with professional installation included (that price is for homes with an existing bypass loop). For a full breakdown, see our guide to what a water softener costs in Pendleton.

Hard water FAQ

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. The USGS describes the residue from hard water as unsightly but not dangerous. The problems it causes are with your home, not your health.

How can I tell if I have hard water without a test?

Look for white crust on faucets, spotty dishes, soap that won't lather, and a ring in the tub or toilet. If you see two or more, you very likely have hard water.

What is considered hard water in grains per gallon?

Anything over 7 grains per gallon is hard, and over 10.5 is very hard. Indiana averages around 14.

Does city water in Pendleton have hard water?

Pendleton's town water comes from groundwater, which picks up minerals from the limestone underground. A free water test will tell you your exact level.
